The Team

ABOUT THE OWNER: E. Chris Willcox

Owner and founder of Kaiwi Makai Marine Inc., Chris’s career in the marine industry began as a deckhand aboard liveaboard dive boats operating in California’s Channel Islands.

Earning his USCG captains license early on, Chris has held a 200GRT Masters license for 25 years, and has operated commercial, recreational and research vessels throughout California, the northeast United States, Mexico and Hawaii.

In 2004, he completed a rebuild of a 29’ Pearson Triton sloop which he then sailed on a 6000-mile cruising journey through Mexico, and then crossing the Pacific ending in Hawaii.

Chris’s passion for the industry has developed into a keen sense for carefully outfitting vessels to withstand the rigors of the marine environment.

A strong work ethic coupled with an inherent skill for designing thoughtful electrical systems form principles upheld at Kaiwi Makai Marine Inc.

When he is not working at his maritime business, he enjoys time with his family, working at his home and property, chasing surf, diving, and finding new outdoor adventures.

Technician: Troy Mott

Originally from Hillsboro, Oregon, a thirst for warmer waters and sunshine brought Troy Mott to the Big Island at the end of April, 2022. Shortly after arriving, he met the love of his life, and is now married and recently became a dad.

The couple lives in Captain Cook, and enjoy surfing, hiking, and chillin’ on the beach. Troy is a perpetual tinkerer, and can often be found taking things apart and (usually) putting them back together again in working order.

Troy was hired straight out of DIT (Diver’s Institute of Technology) in Seattle to work at the fish farm here in Kona. Troy met Chris and Shane of KMM while assisting them with a haul-out project for one of the boats owned and operated by the farm, and was immediately impressed by their skills, work ethic and great attitudes.

Troys background includes several years’ experience working as a heavy equipment mechanic, satellite technician and low-voltage electrician, and most recently as a commercial diver and underwater welder.

After two years with the fish farm, Troy was eager to expand his skill set, and was thrilled to hear that KMM was looking for a technician. Troy is excited to use and learn new skills he possesses that will offer KMM business growth. Troy is excited for all that will be learned.

Facilities Manager | Blue Ocean Mariculture

Kaiwi Makai Marine is our go to whenever we need electrical work on our boats.  Big projects or small,  they care about the work they do and are genuinely concerned with how we are doing.

Sailfish 22 wac | Tyler Dickinson

I hired Chris and his team at Kaiwi Makai Marine to install a Garmin auto pilot on my 22’ sailfish boat.  They were very professional and the system works great.  The sea trial test went flawlessly and they integrated the autopilot with my other Garmin electronics.  Would definitely hire them again.

All the stars!!!

Kaiwi Makai Marine is the ABSOLUTE BEST! They re-powered our Gemini 105mc catamaran with an off-grid, fully electric propulsion system that had never been configured previously. Our vessel now runs entirely on solar, wind and propeller regeneration with a diesel generator for back-up. We run commercial charters and the safety of our guests is paramount; I had seen Chris' work on off-grid homes and knew that everything would be done with utmost precision. Our configuration was entirely uncharted territory at the time but Kaiwi Makai's crew painstakingly engineered and built the system in the summer of 2022 and it has been functioning amazingly ever since, not to mention it completely meets or exceeds ABYC specs. Their work is Proper! They are extremely professional, responsive and a true joy to work with. They were even able to troubleshoot inherent issues with the propulsion system that the manufacturer had overlooked and continue to work closely with the manufacturer as a result. I wholeheartedly recommend them for any marine electrical situation, they do not disappoint!
